Shifts in Student Leadership

Students wanting a role as next year’s leaders gathered for a required session in early March to learn about guiding, supporting, and creating memorable school events next year.

Newly named Leadership Advisor, Timothy Gomez, received many applicants, promoting discussions about the chances of being accepted.

Some students were concerned that their grade level could impact their chances of getting into Leadership, but Gomez said, “At the end of the day, we are trying to choose the students who were the best fit for the leadership class, no matter the grade.”

The Leadership Advisor is the only one in charge of reviewing applications during the first round. “But once we get to the second round, a selection of teachers, admin, and other support staff will be on a panel to help with interviews. We will make final decisions together,” said Gomez.

Students in Creative Writing may also know Gomez as their Conservatory Director, and want to congratulate him on his new role and for managing the many Conservatory activities he offers like Open- Mic Nights and Sugar Pine. Students are often amazed at how he balances so many major responsibilities.

“I’m still not positive how I’m going to balance the roles, but I think the two roles will actually complement each other! This year, I am teaching two academic classes along with being Director. Those roles are SO different, so it can be very difficult sometimes, but exciting! The role of Leadership Advisor actually seems way more similar to my role as Director, so I think it will be a natural transition.”
