A Rundown of Hadestown

The IA conservatory brought an undying love story to the stage as students performed Hadestown from February 26 to March 1.

Hadestown takes place in a world waiting for spring (not unlike California last month). The Broadway musical puts a spin on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. A mix of folk, jazz, and blues music, and conditions that suggest the Great Depression set the scene. While Orpheus writes a song to bring back the spring, Eurydice tries to survive. Ultimately, they end up in the industrial Hadestown, allowed to leave on one condition: they can’t look back at each other.

IA’s show was set in a bar. Jack Hagan built the set as his senior capstone project for P&D over the course of two months. His favorite part was the bar table. “Flaps could open on each side of it for people to walk behind the bar,” he said. “I loved it and was very proud of it.”

Tiffany Fink, who played the narrator Hermes, said the cast was extraordinarily close and supportive. “Every rehearsal we would eat dinner together while we talked,” she said. “Seeing everyone come together and help me when I needed it was really beautiful.”

Isabella Zhang was the show dance captain. “We would have such an open space that it allowed us to sit in a giant circle and laugh and talk about anything, just soaking up each other’s presence.”
