AP Test Stress

Are you stressed about your AP test? College level courses available to high schoolers provide the opportunity to earn college credit and increase GPA by passing an end-of-year exam attached to each class. Those choosing to take the exam often find themselves under the pressure of recalling a year’s worth of advanced material.

AP World History student Kristina Ghazaryan said, “I wanna cry.” This is likely to be one theme of many for students who plan to take an AP test–or furthermore, tests.  Overwhelmed by the amount of material, studying strategies, and resources, many students find themselves using inefficient studying methods or cramming at the last minute. But it’s important to remember that consistency is the foundation for retaining information.

AP World History teacher Mr. Chi suggests to “plan out your studying as far out as you can and take baby steps to get to the finish line.” There are many free resources available online tailored to enabling students to learn the material for specific AP classes, and a quick search will surely bring you to a reliable source.

Test taking strategies like the process of elimination should also be kept in mind, along with the benefits of trying out new studying methods like active recall or timed practice. Instead of cowering at the thought of your AP test, start your preparation now, while you still have plenty of time to study, until you’ve reached a level of confidence in your abilities. If you still have anxiety, it might reassure you to know that “we (CSArts) historically have a pretty good passing rate compared to the state of California and the national passing rate,” said Mr. Chi. So take comfort in our school’s great AP exam history and keep going!
