The annual MTV VMAs, one of the most legendary nights of music went down on September 27th, hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Madonna was in the spotlight singing two hits from her album, then finishing off with “Danceteria afterhours” featuring Charli Xcx. This very exciting beaming performance including appearances of some recognizable Hollywood names.
Madonna took home 7 MTV “moonmen” awards by the end of the night causing a lot of discourse on social media. CSArts Sophomore student Luna Borboa had some thoughts about these constant wins. ¨The VMAS this year were great, with the tribute to Nirvana and Dolly Parton, but Madonna won about 7 awards. It got to the point where she looked visibly tired to get up and accept award after award. I think there were so many more deserving artists like Sienna Spiro and Olivia Dean who are amazing rising artists that released more songs for this generation than Madonna, who released this album to show us a ¨newer version¨ of herself.”
The show featured two major tributes to iconic music figures. Kacey Musgraves delivered a tribute to Dolly Parton by singing “I will always love you.” Artists RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims, Adam Lambert, Meek, MNEK, and Saint Harison all sang a multi-hit tribute to George Michael. ¨Dolly and George Michael transcend time with their gifts to music. And it’s fitting for MTV to honor the two greats because they influenced and will continue to inspire musicians for years to come,” said former Top 40 DJ and journalism instructor Robert Blair.
Swedish rapper Yung Lean collaborated with GENERA8ION to bring a very moving performance to Storm II. This included** a huge ensemble of male dancers dressed in school uniforms.
Overall this year’s VMAs turned lots of heads and shed light on how powerful music is today.
